The education system is one of the great evils of our world
Nobody looks back at their childhood and thinks, "dang, school was such an enriching, rewarding experience." School is something to be survived, a grueling exercise in how to navigate a myriad of miserable circumstances all while keeping one's sanity.
Most people seem to have an idea in their head of what school is, and that idea doesn't match reality. School is not a place of learning, and curiosity, and expansive growth. It's the domain of bullies, both students and teachers, a place where the creative process goes to die as students are continuously crammed full of useless knowledge.
School doesn't allow for differences of opinion. There is one right answer to all queries, and teachers (and parents) demand that students memorize and regurgitate that answer, over and over and over for more than a decade, lest they face severe punishments in the form of verbal abuse by teachers and parents, and the other negative consequences that come from getting poor grades.
School teaches kids to categorize each other based on superficial measurements - fat or skinny, smart or dumb, attractive or not.
As if the tension of thousands of hours school steals from us wasn’t enough, and ever increasing amount of homework takes away what little free time with which kids can attempt to build their own identity free of the child prison system.
Ultimately, school prepares kids for a life of dull medium, spent shuffling papers around an office for a paycheck. There is nothing exciting or stimulating or meaningful about what happens at school - it is a place where dreams go to die, as the child is warped and shaped and molded into what adults that are themselves dead inside demand that they become. This is why I believe that the education system is one of the great evils of our world - it steals kid's youthful exuberance and vitality, and replaces it with a deafened automaton.
There is a place called Zena democratic school on the east coast of the United States. This is such an excellent place, because the way they operate is that they allow kids the freedom to have a childhood. There is no set curriculum, the kids are simply allowed to spend their time how they choose. Invariably, kids choose a wide range of activities, from reading to socializing to playing video games to doing science projects.
